It is my pleasure to introduce our new journal, the ASME Journal of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage (JEECS), published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The mission of this journal is to provide a forum for archival publication of research and development related to electrochemical energy devices and systems.

The ASME Journal of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage replaces the ASME Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology (2004–2015). Under the leadership of a new and expanded editorial board, this new journal will have a much broader technology scope that includes fuel cells.

This new journal reflects the latest scientific thinking on advanced energy conversion and storage technologies. JEECS will focus on the processes, components, devices, and systems that store and convert electrical and chemical energy. This will be achieved by organization along a number of technology tracks: batteries, flow batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, electrochemical separation membranes, electrochemical capacitors, thermogalvanic cells, and photoelectrochemical cells. The journal will publish peer-reviewed archival scholarly articles, research papers, technical briefs, review articles, perspective articles, and special volumes. Specific areas of interest include electrochemical engineering, electrocatalysis, novel materials, analysis and design of components, devices, and systems, balance of plant, novel numerical and analytical simulations, advanced materials characterization, innovative material synthesis and manufacturing methods, thermal management, reliability, durability, and damage tolerance. The papers are solicited in, but not limited to, the aforementioned technology tracks. The authors can submit papers using the ASME Digital Submission Site1.

The direction of the journal can be seen in the special issues being planned. Among them, a special issue on “Multiphysics Coupling in Energy Storage” will report scientific findings presented during a U.S. National Science Foundation sponsored symposium on Multiphysics Coupling in Energy Storage organized during the 2015 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. In Li-ion battery chemistry and beyond, there are complex, dynamical systems, which include a multitude of coupled physicochemical processes encompassing electronic, ionic, diffusive transport in solid/electrolyte phases, electrochemical and phase change reactions, and stress generation in multiscale porous electrodes. This special issue will discuss how the performance and lifetime of such electrochemical energy storage devices are dependent on complex reaction/transport processes spanning across multiple length and time scales.

A second special issue will focus on “Anion Exchange Membranes and AEM Based Systems.” It will document the advances to be reported at the upcoming 2016 Workshop on Ion Exchange Membranes for Energy Applications (EMEA2016). The main focus of this workshop, which was held annually since 2013, will be on anion exchange membranes, their synthesis, characterization, stability, and their performance in electrochemical applications. These can be fuel cells, electrolyzers, redox flow batteries, zinc–air batteries, and reverse electrodialysis cells.

Finally, a third special issue being planned is on “Modeling and Experimental Validation of Fuel Cells, Batteries, and Electrolyzers,” which will document the advances reported at the Symposium on Modeling and Experimental Validation of Fuel Cells, Batteries, and Electrolyzers (MODVAL2016), the 13th of an established annual event, initiated in 2004 by the Swiss Federal Energy Office.

The launch of this new journal would not have been possible without an outstanding team of Associate Editors (Dr. Jacob Bowen of the Technical University of Denmark, Professor Robert Braun of the Colorado School of Mines, Professor Umberto Desideri of the University of Pisa, Dr. Dirk Henkensmeier of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Professor Kevin Huang of the University of South Carolina, Professor San Ping Jiang of Curtin University, Professor Matthew Mench of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Professor William Mustain of the University of Connecticut, Professor Peter Pintauro of Vanderbilt University, and Professor Vittorio Verda of the Politecnico di Torino), Guest Editors (Dr. Alexander Dyck of NEXT ENERGY, Professor Steven Holdcroft of Simon Fraser University, Professor Partha Mukerjee of Texas A&M University, Professor George Nelson of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Professor John R. Varcoe of the University of Surrey, and Dr. Jan Van Herle of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), and ASME journal staff members.

Electrochemical energy storage and energy conversion is a very active research, development, and commercialization area. Government and industry have challenged engineers and scientists to create new “greener” renewable technology that can meet society's needs for energy conversion and storage. This new journal will be a central source of technical information in the rapidly growing energy marketplace and will focus on a cleaner future through batteries, fuel cells, and other electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies. I look forward to serving the electrochemical science, engineering, and technology communities during my tenure at the ASME Journal of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage.
